In this photo are Rotarian Jackie Jones with her guest speaker Jessica Giles from Machias Savings Bank. Giles educated the club on the many ways that criminals perform business email compromise scans otherwise known as BEC. Fraudsters, as Giles called them, use techniques to fool CEO’s and controllers into forwarding funds to accounts that are handled by the criminals. Giles showed how businesses can be alert to these practices and not fall vulnerable to loosing thousands of dollars. Double questioning in different ways like a phone call questioning the transaction can prevent this fraud and usually stops criminals dead in their tracks when their sources are questioned. The FBI, Internet Crime Complaint Center and Best Practices for Business to Detect BEC are all on the web for assistance with such concerns.
