Here in the photo is Vice President of the Houlton Rotary Club Julie Delano and Dr. Susan Hunter of the University of Maine Systems. Dr. Hunter shared valuable information with the club at its meeting on January 9, 2017. She spoke to the partnership that the University has with the County with the potato industry, the woods industry and also a new recycling product. The University offers assistance with research and development in the laboratory and in the field. These partnerships benefit the economy of the County. Also students from the County are a “natural resource” to the University as there are currently 371 students from the County and 69 are from the Houlton area. The University assists Maine students with scholarships and support once they are on campus. The Engineering program is growing and there is need for a new building and the Nursing program has had to turn away students. As a land grant college the University works with other New England land grant schools sharing students and programs.
